Something you can count on during any election season is the use of hyperbole to drum up support among ideologically minded voters. But sometimes I wonder how much is hyperbole.

Take Buck Newton, not a 50s comic hero, but a state senator for North Carolina who is the Republican nominee for attorney general. Here’s what he had to say the other day about current events:

“Go home, tell your friends and family who had to work today what this is all about and how hard we must fight to keep our state straight,” Newton told attendees at the rally, according to a video posted by Progress North Carolina Action.

Oops. Somebody went beyond the talking points and revealed what all of this is really about. Instead of predators attacking women and children, something that speaks to rape culture rather than gender identity. But that’s okay: trans people are only .3% of the population, an easy target.

(I don’t know the percentages for us non-binary folks, and I imagine, with how many of us really don’t advertise that fact, it would be impossible to be sure.)
